The sixth and final edition of Axial Shifts, ENSURED’s biannual newsletter, looks at what the project leaves behind: the new ENSURED Policy Toolkit, our capstone recommendations to the EU, and our work on EU strategic narratives. Plus: a look back at our final conference in Brussels, new academic publications, IO speed-dating with the Universal Postal Union, and a historical note marking 80 years of UNESCO.

‍

International cooperation is changing. As geopolitical frictions mount across policy areas from trade to climate and health, ENSURED has examined how the EU can help defend multilateralism and make global governance more robust, effective, and democratic. For three years, Axial Shifts has curated key ideas and updates from across the project for policymakers, scholars, and engaged citizens. This issue is our last.

What’s inside:

  • The ENSURED Policy Toolkit: Our new online resource brings three years of findings together in one place. Explore by policy area, compare pathways and key actors, and go straight to recommendations.
  • Our recommendations to the EU: The capstone report Shoring Up an International System Adrift on how the EU can hold together an evolving web of institutions, coalitions, and informal arrangements.
  • Telling the story of global governance: How the EU talks about the international order and where the gaps are, plus guidance for policymakers and a strategic communications training manual.
  • Policy briefs: On safeguarding the WHO ahead of the 2027 Director-General election, and on what it would take to fix the multilateral refugee response.
  • Blog highlights: The ENSURED coordinators look back on what the project has learned, and we ask whether IOs can win public support in an increasingly contested world.
  • ENSURED’s grand finale: Our final conference at CEPS in Brussels, dissemination events from Rome to Washington, DC, and an ENSURED special issue in Global Policy.
  • IO Speed Dating: Meet the Universal Postal Union (UPU)!
  • In global governance history: 80 years since UNESCO’s constitution entered into force, and why the stories we tell about institutions matter.

Make sure to read the full newsletter. And thank you to everyone who read, shared, debated, and collaborated with us over the past three years!
